When Joseph Pilates was serving in the Isle of Man during world war one, he came up with a set of interesting exercise techniques that required utmost control. He dubbed the techniques contrology. The exercises he developed were made possible with the use of a crude machine rigged from a hospital bed. Over time, the machine was refined and came to be known as the Pilates Reformer. The reformer is not a cheap piece of gym equipment and is mainly used in studios.
In order to make Pilates DVD’s more relatable for home use, the Performer was created. The Performer is a simplified version of the Reformer machine. The problem with the original machine was that it was too costly and big to set up in the average home setting.
